A leaking wheel seal, unusually hot hub, grinding noise or loose wheel-end condition can turn into a serious roadside failure if it is ignored. Drivers and dispatchers should treat wheel-end symptoms differently from an ordinary tire-pressure or tread problem because bearings, hubs, seals, brakes and tires interact at the same corner of the vehicle.

Signs that deserve immediate attention

  • Oil or lubricant visible on the inside of the wheel, rim or brake area.

  • A hub that is significantly hotter than comparable wheel ends.

  • Grinding, rumbling or growling that changes with vehicle speed.

  • Visible wheel movement, looseness or an abnormal wheel angle.

  • Smoke, burning odor or heat coming from the wheel end.

  • A tire failure accompanied by hub, seal or brake damage.

Why a wheel seal leak is more than an oil stain

A failed seal can allow lubricant to leave the hub and may contaminate nearby brake components. The technician needs to inspect the source of the leak, the condition of the bearing and hub, and surrounding components rather than simply cleaning the wheel and sending the unit back out.

Heat can point to several different problems

A hot wheel end can be related to bearing trouble, brake drag, lubrication loss or another mechanical condition. Comparing wheel-end temperatures may help identify which corner is abnormal, but temperature alone does not identify the failed part. Mechanical inspection is still required.

Information that helps roadside diagnosis

Tell dispatch which axle and side are affected, whether the symptom is on the tractor or trailer, when the noise or heat began, whether the unit recently had brake or wheel-end work, and whether a tire failure occurred at the same position. Photos of oil patterns, the hub and the back side of the wheel can be useful.

Do not keep driving a questionable wheel end

If there is smoke, severe heat, obvious looseness, heavy leakage or a wheel that does not appear secure, continuing to drive can increase the damage. The safest course is to keep the unit parked until the condition is evaluated.
