A trailer tandem that will not slide, lock or release can interrupt a pickup, delivery or axle-position adjustment even when the tractor and trailer otherwise operate normally. The roadside repair starts with determining whether the problem is air-actuated, mechanically bound or related to alignment and hardware.

Describe whether the pins are stuck in or stuck out

Tell dispatch whether the tandem pins refuse to retract, retract but will not extend, or appear uneven from side to side. That distinction helps identify whether the issue is in the actuation system or the pin/linkage area.

Air-actuated systems need air-system information

If the tandem release uses air, report whether the trailer has normal air pressure and whether you hear a leak when the release control is operated. An air-line, valve, cylinder or related actuation problem can prevent normal movement.

Mechanical binding can occur under load

Pins can bind against the rail when the trailer position places pressure on them. Road surface, trailer load and alignment can change how easily a tandem moves. Do not hammer or modify safety components in an improvised way.

Confirm that all pins are fully locked before travel

A tandem that is not securely locked is a serious safety issue. After repair or adjustment, the locking condition must be verified before the trailer returns to service.
